THE STONE STATUES AT TIAHUANACU

The head shown here, roughly 4 feet tall, is covered with glyph-like symbols, which may be a form of writing which could reveal many things--but to date no one has a clue as to their possible meaning. A complete statue, known as the Idol, stands in the southwest corner of the Kalasasaya temple, opposite the Gate of the Sun. Its stiff, expressionless features have struck professionals and non-professionals alike with a sense of awe.
